Bus lanes and bus priority

Bus lanes and bus priority

Illustrative graphic

At places where there are often long delays, we are proposing creating new bus lanes and giving buses priority over other vehicles. This will help buses be more punctual and reliable, as well as quicker.

Map of proposed improvements

The Staunton Lane junction is a pinch point for traffic heading into Bristol, largely due to a narrow right turn from the A37.

Proposals

  • Make the A37 wider by making the pavement slightly narrower to make space for a dedicated right-hand turn lane
  • Upgrade traffic signals to detect buses and let them through the lights quicker
  • Widen the pavement at parts of the Staunton Lane junction to slow traffic and provide shared pavement for walking and cycling

What could this mean?

  • Traffic would be quicker through the junction, as vehicles turning right no longer block the A37
  • Journeys would be quicker and buses are delayed less by traffic lights
  • Safer and easier to cross Staunton Lane
  • Three fewer car parking spaces to the north of the junction between Staunton Lane and the A37

Proposals

Create new bus lane heading north, between Hursley Hill and Queen Charlton Lane. Vehicles will still be able to use Norton Lane.

Currently, vehicles joining the A367 from Bath Road have to give way to 50mph traffic, causing significant delays for buses leaving Peasedown St John.

Proposals

  • Replace the junction with a roundabout, slowing traffic down on the A367 and giving more priority to vehicles joining from Bath Road
  • Redesign the crossing points and pavements so that people can cross the road safely
