We propose to upgrade twelve bus stops in and around Keynsham. These changes would improve accessibility, help to improve the reliability (buses on time) and reduced journey times of buses. Wherever possible, real-time information displays will be added to clearly show when the next buses will arrive.

The stops that would be upgraded are:

  • Two on Durley Hill (Keynsham Cemetery stops, eastbound and westbound)
  • Two on Bristol Road (Rugby Club stops, eastbound and westbound)
  • Two on Bath Road (Unity Road stops, eastbound and westbound)
  • Two on Bath Hill (The Talbot, eastbound and Wellsway, northbound)
  • Two on High Street (Keynsham Church stops A and C, eastbound and westbound)
  • Keynsham Station Stops A and C

Upgrades to bus stops would include:

  • Raising kerbs so they are level with bus doors, making it easier to get on and off
  • Live digital information screens with real-time bus information
  • Creating space for bike racks wherever it is appropriate to do so
  • Adding new shelters with seating or making the stops larger where there is space
  • Making bus stopping areas longer and moving some bus stops out of laybys and into the road
  • Improving accessibility to bus stops via new crossings

To allow the changes at the High Street roundabout, we would probably need to remove or relocate Keynsham Church Bus Stop B. While this is still being explored, we would work closely with bus operators to help minimise any potential impacts to services and consider how the newly upgraded bus stops could provide the same, if not improved, bus services as the existing ones.

For the bus stops on Bristol Road (close to the Keynsham Rugby Football Club and the Crown Inn) we are also proposing to add 155 metres of double yellow lines to prevent informal parking along this stretch of the road.

Preventing informal parking in this location would also improve pedestrian safety and accessibility by stopping obstruction of the existing advisory cycle lane and pathway by parked vehicles.

The proposals would also reduce delays the buses currently experience due to being blocked by parked cars by allowing more road space for buses to safely and efficiently serve the bus stops.

What would these changes mean?

  • A more comfortable and pleasant environment for people waiting for the bus
  • Better travel information available at bus stops
  • More opportunities for more people to cycle to bus routes with better bike parking
  • Buses can stay on schedule more easily, allowing for more reliable bus travel
  • Loss of some informal road parking, such as at The Crown pub to allow for the improved bus stop and to help buses move more freely
